Your questions, answered

Find clear answers to the questions we hear most, from first visits and prices to braces, aligners and retainers. For personal advice, contact our team.

What treatments do you offer at Lucan Orthodontics?

At Lucan Orthodontics, we focus exclusively on specialist orthodontic care - the field of dentistry dedicated to diagnosing, preventing, and correcting problems with tooth and jaw alignment at any age.
For children and teenagers, treatment often focuses on guiding jaw development and ensuring teeth come through in the right position.
For adults, orthodontics can restore balance, function, and confidence, improving both the health and appearance of your smile.
Our treatments range from traditional braces to clear aligners and advanced custom-made appliances, always planned with precision and adapted to each patient’s needs. See our treatments.

Fixed vs removable retainers - what’s the difference?

Fixed retainers are thin wires placed discreetly behind your front teeth. They stay in place permanently and require careful flossing.
Removable retainers are clear trays worn mainly at night. They’re easy to clean and replace if lost.
Many patients have both types for added stability.

How long does orthodontic treatment usually take?

The length of orthodontic treatment varies for each person, depending on the type of correction needed and how the teeth respond. On average, most treatments last between 18 and 30 months, though simpler cases can take less time, while more complex ones may take longer.
Your orthodontist will give you an estimate once your treatment plan has been carefully assessed.

What discomfort should I expect after getting braces?

It’s normal to feel some mild soreness or tenderness in your teeth for a few days after your braces are first fitted.
This is simply a sign that the teeth have started to move and adapt to the new appliance.
Any discomfort usually settles within three to five days and can be managed with soft foods or mild pain relief if needed.

How do clear aligners work, and are they right for me?

Clear aligners are custom made transparent trays that gently move your teeth step by step. We start with a full assessment and a digital scan, then create a 3D plan of your results. You wear each set of aligners as directed and come in for quick check ups to keep things on track.
Aligners can suit many people, but they do rely on commitment. To work well, they need to be worn for around 22 hours a day, only coming out for eating, drinking and brushing. At your consultation, we will talk you through whether aligners are the best fit for your teeth, your goals and your day to day routine.

At what age should children have their first orthodontic visit?

Most children benefit from their first orthodontic assessment around the age of six, when the first permanent teeth begin to appear.
At this stage, we can check that the teeth and jaws are developing as expected and identify any issues early - such as crowding, crossbites, or habits that may affect growth.
Early assessments don’t always lead to immediate treatment, but they allow us to monitor development and plan the best time to start if needed.

Is orthodontics only for children?

Not at all! Orthodontic treatment can be effective at any age.
For children, orthodontics can help guide jaw growth and prevent certain bite problems before they become more complex.
For adults, treatment focuses on improving alignment, function and aesthetics using braces or clear aligners, always based on a full specialist assessment.
While the goals and techniques may differ, the principle is the same: with the right diagnosis and a personalised plan, it’s possible to achieve a healthy, balanced smile at any stage of life.

What can I eat with braces?

You can enjoy most foods, but it’s best to avoid anything too hard, sticky, or chewy, such as popcorn, nuts, toffee, or chewing gum.
Cut crunchy foods (like apples and carrots) into small pieces and chew carefully.
Soft foods, like pasta, rice, fish, cooked vegetables, are great choices, especially after adjustments.
Good eating habits not only protect your braces but also keep your treatment running smoothly.

What should I do in case of an orthodontic emergency?

If you experience a problem with your braces or aligners, such as a broken bracket, loose wire or lost retainer please contact us as soon as possible.
We’ll advise you on what to do and arrange an appointment if needed.
Minor issues can sometimes be managed at home until your next visit.
For example, if a wire is rubbing, you can cover it with orthodontic wax and contact us to schedule a repair.
If you’re unsure, it’s always best to call and our team will guide you through the next steps.

Do you offer payment plans?

Yes! We offer flexible, interest-free payment options to make treatment manageable.
Our team will explain all available plans at your consultation and help you choose the option that suits you best.
